Business processes are first modeled to reflect the “as-is” situation. Modeling also achieves processes documentation, which is the first step for any quality certification. After modeling the processes are simulated to run as if they were running for weeks, months or even years. This allows business analysts to see how their processes will perform given different factors and circumstances, enabling them to conduct several “what-if” scenarios without having to wait or invest in potentially faulty processes. After processes are defined, the processes are executed through the workflow engine which accommodates corporate-specific business rules. During execution process data is gathered such as:
  • How much time did each process take to run?
  • What was the utilization rate of the resources used in the process?
  • What was the average idle time of the resources in the process?
  • How much did the process cost to run?
    • All the gathered information takes into account factors such as vacation time, lunch breaks and the speed or experience of the resources involved in a process.

    Finally, as process data is gathered, it is used once again with the modeling and simulation tools by business analysts. This allows analysts to understand how their processes are performing at real time. It also allows them to run simulations on modified process models using actual process data, and thus making their simulations more reflective of reality as time passes by. It is through this constant feedback loop that companies can support operational initiatives such as six sigma, ITIL or eTOM.
